1000 Books Before Kindergarten

The library offers two ongoing reading programs for pre-kindergarten children: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and Baby Bugs.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten asks parents and caregivers to commit to reading 1,000 books with their children before entering kindergarten. Progress is tracked on provided worksheets and books may be counted multiple times for each re-read. Incentives and rewards are given upon reaching certain milestones in the program, and markers are placed on our banner each time a child completes 100 books. Upon completing the program, children will receive a book, a graduation certificate, and will have their photo placed on our Wall of Fame. They will also be invited to a celebration party.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Gold is open to children under the age of 4 that have completed the 1.000 Books Before Kindergarten Program and are ready for another challenge.  To reach a Gold Reader status, each child must

     - Read 2,000 books to receive the Bronze Medal
     - Read 3,000 books to receive the Silver Medal
     - Read 4,000 books to receive the Gold Medal

Rewards will be given for reaching each reading goal and there is no end date to the program.  Once a child is registered, the goal is to finish before he or she enters school.

Baby Bugs is the precursor to 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, and is designed for children who are under two years old at the time of enrollment. Baby Bugs participants commit to reading 100 books with their babies by the time they turn two and offer similar incentives and rewards. Upon completing Baby Bugs, children will be enrolled in 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten with a 100 book head start.

There is no deadline to complete the programs and sign-ups can be done at any time. For more information and to register, contact the library at 225-8951, or visit during library hours.
