The StoryWalk® is an outdoor storytelling experience that is enjoyable for the whole family!
It first came to fruition when one of our children’s librarians was inspired by the beauty she saw along the pond on the Greece Town Hall Campus. It seemed like the perfect place to combine several important things for our residents in a unique way: literacy, nature, and outdoor exercise, so we immediately got to work! In August 2018, a team worked together to install the StoryWalk® along the Greece Town Hall Campus Walking Trail.
So, what exactly is StoryWalk®? It’s an incredibly unique way to read a story! A children’s book is placed along the trail, with each page laid out on its own station. As you walk along the trail, you are guided to the next page to read the entire book. In total, there are 18 reading stations that are spaced along a ¼ mile portion of the trail. It begins near the playground, continues around the retention pond, and finishes up near the Pickleball courts.
The stations consist of weather resistant frames containing pages from children’s books selected by our children’s librarians, and changed out every two months.
StoryWalk® was designed as a fun way for our young residents to enjoy physical activity, family time, and reading in the great outdoors! It is open year round, rain, snow, or shine, so we hope to see you on the trail soon!
A special thank you to the Friends of the Greece Public Library for providing funding for the frames, and for the work the Greece Public Library and Greece Parks and Recreation Department contributed in their installation.
The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration the Kellogg Hubbard Library. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.
